    So the word soccer was a shortened version of an association (can't remember what it was called), but when the association was disbanded, the original name – football – came back into play. So it was never really soccer, it was just a nickname that didn't last for long.

  2. The S word was always particular slang in Oxford (who also gave us the fiver). Ever since the game's inception football has been the primary word and the S word just a nickname that a few media happened to enshrine.

    That's why every club is FC and it's the FOOTBALL Association over in England.
