  1. Linguistically creative students at the University of Oxford in the 1880s distinguished between the sports of “rugger” (rugby football) and “assoccer” (association football). The latter term was further shortened to “soccer” (sometimes spelled “socker”), and the name quickly spread beyond the campus.

  2. Personally if someone from another country wanted to call the sport I play something else I wouldn’t care at all. I don’t get why people would be offended over this ?‍♂️ Call it what you want let’s just enjoy the beautiful sport

  3. AMERICANS ALWAYS doing the opposite of things!! The world metric, they use feet. The world uses Celsius, they use Farenheit. The world use kilometers, they use miles. ????? Americans play a sport using their hands and call if FOOTball ????

  4. “DURR BUT YOU THROW TEH BALL”

Here come the Eurosnobs! The game was isn’t called football because you kick the ball… it’s called football because it’s a game that’s played on foot ( in other words running ) as opposed to equestrian sports or water based sports . This is why Rugby is technically Rugby Football even though the ball is held by hand and thrown laterally most of the time.

The term Soccer is also a shortened form of “Association Football” , the original name of the sport ( the term Soccer was originally penned by the English as well ). Much like how Rugby Football received the nickname “Rugger”

  5. All the Europeans in the comments talking sh&t really ignore the fact it was a damn Englishman who literally invented the word. If that's the case then all of you should stfu, fr lol
