Former Premier League star Christian Atsu has died following the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey, his agent has said.

Atsu was due to fly out just hours before the deadly quake struck the area he was in.

A post from agent Nana Sechere on Twitter announced that the former Newcastle midfielder’s body has been found 12 days on from the disaster in Turkey and Syria which has claimed more than 40,000 lives.

About two weeks after the earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria, the body of Ghana soccer player Christian Atsu was reportedly discovered under rubble on Saturday.

The body of Christian Atsu was found this morning, and it is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce that to all well wishers,» Atsu’s agent Nana Sechere wrote on Twitter. Sincere condolences to his loved ones and family.

According to Turkey’s national news channel TRT Haber on Saturday, the body of the Hatayspor footballer was found under the wreckage of a damaged building in Antakya.

The team he played for, Hatayaspor, announced on Twitter that they will be returning his body to Ghana. I pray for your safety and beauty. Furthermore, «there are no words to explain our anguish,» the statement said.

According to the most recent estimate provided by Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, at least 45,513 people were killed after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Turkey and Syria on February 6. Atsu has not been seen since.

It was first reported that Atsu had been found and was hospitalised in Turkey, however on February 8 Sechere tweeted that it had become clear that Atsu was still missing, contradicting earlier reports.
A former member of Al Raed FC of the Saudi Pro League, Atsu joined Hatayspor last year. Notable English clubs he had played for were Chelsea, Everton, Bournemouth, and Newcastle.

We are terribly saddened to read that Christian Atsu has tragically lost his life in Turkey’s horrific earthquakes,» said Newcastle United, for whom Atsu played from 2016 to 2021, during which time he made 121 appearances and helped the team secure promotion to the English Premier League.

Chelsea released a statement saying the team «sends our profound condolences to Christian’s family and friends,» while Everton tweeted that it was «truly grieved.»

For the Black Stars, Atsu made 65 appearances in national team competition, and he was a key contributor to their run to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final. Ghana ultimately lost that match to Ivory Coast on penalties, but Atsu was still honoured as the tournament’s most valuable player.

As news of Atsu’s death broke, the Ghana Football Association expressed its «deepest sympathies» to his family.
